The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore organized the 3rd SIEW Energy Insights in Tokyo on 26 July 2016 to discuss the latest energy developments in Japan. Professor Tatsuo Masuda, from Nagoya University of Commerce and Business; Tsuneo Miyamoto, Oil and Gas Leader at KPMG Japan; and Yukari Yamashita, Board Member and Director of Energy Data and Modelling Center at the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) shared their views with more than 70 participants

The session discussed the SIEW theme, “New Energy Realities” and its relevance to Japan. Other topics included the impact of oil prices being lower for longer on energy investments and security, developments in Japan’s electricity market reform and its power generation industry, and the opportunities for energy collaboration between Japan and Asia.

“The biggest new reality is the need to decarbonise the energy system. Japan is no exception.

This is a huge challenge which may be resolved through technology. The vast experience of the Japanese energy sector could also provide an answer.”

“In Japan, we are currently focusing on energy reform, including the gas and power utility markets.

This could be a game changer that will bring many benefits.”

“After the earthquake, we learned that we are dependent on imported energy. Therefore we have to diversify energy sources and suppliers, while achieving 3Es (Energy Security, Economic Efficiency, Environment) and safety. There are also many lessons that we can share with the rest of the Asia in light of our common challenges.”

“Asia is a hotspot in the energy sector and energy could be the common thread for cooperation in the region.

We can work together to build a power grid connecting the continent, have an Asia LNG hub, or collaborate on energy technologies that could benefit Asia and the rest of the world.”

“It is necessary for Asia to cooperate on innovation and investment […] especially Singapore and Japan, where both are focusing on the development of LNG trading market. This is an area of huge opportunity in both countries.”

“Through the energy mix debate, we realised that it is key to introduce more renewables and at the same time liberalise the LNG market. All these are potential areas where we can collaborate […]. As energy importing countries, there are also many other areas for cooperation such as emergency preparedness.”
